Teri Woods is credited as spearheading the entrepreneurial aspect of the street-lit genre, which remains the backbone of the genre’s success as a literary force. During the late 1990s, Woods peddled her books on 125th Street in New York City, selling more than one hundred thousand copies on her own, alone. Author Relentless Aaron also sold more than one hundred thousand copies of his books before signing with a mainstream publisher (St. Martin’s Press). Woods remains a contributing pioneer of the genre; she continues to write and publish as an author (via Grand Central Publishing), and she continues to independently publish up-and-coming authors (via her independent publishing house, Teri Woods Publishing), whereas Aaron has moved his work into video and film production (R. Aaron, personal communication, August 3, 2010). Authors such as K’wan continue to promote their novels on the streets, wishing to keep a close connection with their readers (K’wan’s Twitter feed, July 2010).
